This was quite a fun project. We lived in Ireland, needed a dvd rack and what we found in the stores was either ugly or expensive… or both. I have a thing for celtic designs for quite some time already, so I decided I wan to try and make my own.
So i went to a diy store, got some boards. Got a design template that I liked from the internet (I think this one is from wikipedia). Stretched it to a size i liked and printed it. Instead of just simply get the pattern on by pushing it trough with a carbon-copy paper I went the more fun way of reconstructing the geometrical pattern on the wood. Definitely much more time consuming, but also result i liked much better as I can define many dimensions as I want.
For cutting out i used my little scrollsaw and jigsaw, so lots of hole drilling and cutting to get all the not needed wood away. But eventually I had 2 more or less identical parts
next was time to give it the waving optic. as there was already quite some time involved, I wanted to avoid screwing up. So I made sure to mark out where I had to make my cuts so the pattern is correct for all sides and double and triple checked it. The small wedges I cut out with an oscillating tool. Once it was cut out I pent a lot of time sanding so everything blends in nicely.
For the ‘shelves’ I used 3 dowel rods per level. Making a little template helped a lot in getting it all the same per side and level. Drilling it with a Fostner drill was easy enough and allowed a nice snug fit. I glued in first one side and while the glue was still wet also the second one. However it was now way to bright.
I got some varnish and sprayed on 2 layers with an air gun. Of course a brush would work too, but that way I got a strike free end result. As dvd’s are all the same height it works great with this fixed height approach. For books it works if they are about the same size or one could make.
