oseberg

Without having any clue at all what was expecting me, I got a model kit to build a Oseberg Model.

This was the very first time I was building a model from a kit out of wood. In the past I built several tamiya and similar plastic models, mainly motorbikes and a few VW beetles. There you cut the parts simply out of the grid, clean up the cutting spot, paint it, and glue it in place. Well this was a bit different. All the planks had to be cut out of a flat sheet on which just the outline of every single plank was printed. Not too much room between all the parts. First thing I realized, I can not cut that out with just a hand scrollsaw. So I got myself a record power ss16V scrollsaw. Yeah I had no experiece with one of those either and had to get a hand on it first. There are several mistakes, even broken bits etc. in it. To state the obvious, it is not quite a beginners project 🙂 My ‘workshop’ at the time was in our livingroom. Just a wooden plank on 2 sawhorses at the side of the room. Yeah it was producing quite some dust. I don’t have to many pictures from the build, back then I did not have a phone with a good camera beside me all the time.

Once I had the hull and planks put together, I needed to start and give it some ‘color’. I got 2 different varnishes from a diy store and gave it my coloring. There are also a few plastic parts coming with the kit and I learned trough trying that the varnish actually works quite well on the too. The brush strokes help to give it some wood grain texture.

And here also some of the final shots, before she got out into the sea… Or on the shelf
