kitchen drawer cabinet

For our kitchen we have been in need of storage since we bought the house. The kitchen that came with it, does not offer much storage at all and there is no pantry where things can go either. As drawer slides are quite expensive I didn’t wanted to build a traditional cabinet with lots of slides to install. This should be MDF drawers, riding inside a MDF frame.

From a DIY store I got some 30 mm square poles and several sheets of 4 mm MDF and a sheet of 6 mm plywood. For the rest of the outside I planned using some wood from old pallets I took apart. As I knew I can make the lasered parts exactly the size I will need, I started with the outside of the the cabinet.

The first task was to route groves in the poles where the pallet boards would sit in later. The router table is just perfect for this job. Fence and feather boards make the actual routing just a matter of pushing the poles trough. Easy peasy and very repeatable. I also drilled already the holes and recess for the leveling feet. I wanted to be able to have the feet as much retracted as possible.

On the pallet boards I first trimmed the sides on the tablesaw, to get rid of all the broken off parts. Next was pushing it all trough the thicknesser to have them all the same thickness , followed by rounding over the long sides. Once I had a cart full of boards I cut them all to length.

It got serious now as the first glue up started. I began with what later will be the back wall and with a bit of convincing with a hammer I got it all together and level. Clamps helped to keep it all in place until the glue dried. The sidewalls went together equally unspectacular.

Next I designed what I call the drawer modules with boxes.py. With the laser I can work with up to 900 mm x 1300 mm sheets. To get to the about 2 m height we wanted, I had to come up with a way to get to the full height and making 2 modules seemed the easiest.  We wanted different heights of drawers and with some calculations I got something that looked versatile enough. After a lot of gluing I had a stack of drawers in front of me. I did some sanding of all the sides and also was treating them with some beeswax, that way they slide super nice.
